My Car Won't Start and I Have a Flat Tyre: What Should I Do?

A dead battery and a flat tyre together is a nightmare scenario. Here is a practical guide for Dundee drivers facing double trouble.

It is the perfect storm: you turn the key and nothing happens, then you notice one of your tyres is completely flat. A non-starting car with a flat tyre is a frustrating and potentially expensive situation, but there are steps you can take to handle it calmly and get back on the road.

First, assess which problem is more urgent. If the car will not start at all, you cannot drive it to a garage even if the flat tyre is fixed. Start by diagnosing the starting issue. Is the battery completely dead — no lights, no dashboard, no click? Or does the engine turn over slowly but fail to start? A totally dead battery often needs a jump-start or replacement.

If you have a flat battery and a flat tyre, call a roadside assistance provider for the battery issue and Tayside Mobile Tyres for the tyre. In some cases, a breakdown service can handle both, but many do not carry tyre stock and will only transport your car to a garage. Our mobile fitting means you do not need to be towed.

For the flat tyre, do not attempt to change it yourself if you are on a roadside or in bad weather. It is safer and faster to call our emergency tyre fitting service. We will come to your location, fit a new or repaired tyre, and get your car ready to drive once the battery issue is resolved.

If your car is at home and you have a battery charger or jump pack, address the battery first. Once the car starts, you can drive it to a safer location or wait for our mobile tyre fitter to arrive. Never attempt to drive on a completely flat tyre — even a few metres can destroy the tyre and damage the wheel.

Prevention is better than cure. Regular battery checks, keeping terminals clean, and replacing ageing batteries before they fail can prevent starting issues. For tyres, regular pressure checks and visual inspections catch slow punctures and wear before they strand you.

If you are stuck in Dundee, Broughty Ferry, Monifieth, or Tayside with a flat battery and a flat tyre, call Tayside Mobile Tyres for the tyre issue. We will get you back on the road quickly and safely.
