You do not need to be a mechanic to check your tyres. A simple monthly inspection takes five minutes and can catch problems before they become dangerous or expensive. Here is the routine we recommend for all Dundee drivers.
Start with a visual inspection. Look at each tyre for obvious damage: cuts, bulges, cracks, or objects embedded in the tread. Check the sidewalls carefully, as damage here is not repairable and requires immediate replacement. Look for uneven wear patterns — more wear on the inside or outside edge suggests alignment or inflation issues.
Next, check tread depth. Use a tread depth gauge for accuracy, or the 20p coin test for a quick check. Insert the coin into the tread groove. If the outer band is visible, your tread is below 3mm and you should plan replacement soon. If it is near the 1.6mm legal limit, replace immediately. Check at least three points across each tyre's width.
Check tyre pressure when the tyres are cold. Use a digital pressure gauge for accuracy. Compare the reading to the pressure listed on your door frame placard or owner's manual. Remember to check the spare if your car has one. Adjust pressure at a petrol station or with a home compressor.
Inspect the valves. Ensure valve caps are fitted on all tyres — they keep dirt and moisture out. Check for visible cracking on rubber valves and corrosion on metal ones. A hissing sound when the cap is off indicates a leak.
Finally, take a short test drive and pay attention to how the car feels. Vibrations at speed suggest balancing issues. Pulling to one side indicates alignment problems. Unusual noises may signal a damaged tyre or wheel bearing. If anything feels off, book a professional inspection.
