Pothole Damage in Dundee: How to Spot and Fix Tyre and Wheel Issues

Dundee's roads are not always kind to tyres. Here is how potholes damage tyres and wheels, and what to do about it.

Potholes are an unfortunate reality of driving in Dundee and across Scotland. Winter freeze-thaw cycles, heavy traffic, and budget constraints all contribute to road surface deterioration. Hitting a pothole can cause immediate damage to your tyres, wheels, and suspension — sometimes damage that is not immediately obvious.

The most common pothole-related tyre damage is a sidewall bulge or bubble. This happens when the tyre impacts the pothole edge, compressing the tyre against the rim and causing the internal cords to break. The bulge is actually air pushing through the damaged structure. A bulged tyre is dangerous and must be replaced immediately — it can fail catastrophically at speed.

Wheel rim damage is also common. Alloy wheels can crack, bend, or chip when hitting a pothole hard enough. A bent rim may cause vibration, air leaks, or uneven tyre wear. A cracked rim is a serious safety issue that requires immediate replacement. Our technicians inspect rims carefully during every tyre fitting and will alert you to any damage.

Pothole impacts can also knock your wheel alignment out of spec. If your car pulls to one side after a pothole strike, or if the steering wheel is no longer centred, your alignment needs checking. Misalignment causes rapid, uneven tyre wear and poor handling.

Suspension and steering components can suffer too. Control arms, tie rods, ball joints, and shock absorbers all take the force of a pothole impact. If your car feels different to drive after a hard hit — looser steering, unusual noises, different ride quality — have the suspension inspected by a professional.

If you hit a pothole and suspect damage, call Tayside Mobile Tyres. We will inspect the tyre and wheel, check for alignment issues, and replace the tyre if necessary. For wheel or suspension damage beyond our scope, we will recommend a trusted local garage.

Report potholes to Dundee City Council through their online reporting tool. While this will not fix your damaged tyre, it helps councils identify and repair dangerous roads faster, protecting other drivers from the same fate.
