Tyre-related defects are among the most common reasons for MOT failure in the UK. In fact, tyre condition accounts for a significant percentage of all MOT fails annually. The good news is that tyre problems are easy to prevent with a simple pre-MOT check.
The most frequent tyre-related MOT failure is tread depth below the legal minimum of 1.6mm. MOT testers use a gauge to check the central three-quarters of the tread across the full circumference. If any part of this area measures below 1.6mm, the tyre fails immediately.
Other common tyre MOT failures include sidewall damage such as cuts, bulges, or cracks; exposed ply or cord; mismatched tyres on the same axle; tyres not suitable for the vehicle type; and incorrect load or speed ratings. Even a nail embedded in the tread — if it causes a leak — can result in failure.
To avoid a tyre-related MOT fail, inspect your tyres at least a week before your test. Check tread depth using a gauge or the 20p test. Look for visible damage, bulges, or cracks. Ensure all four tyres match in type — do not mix cross-ply and radial, for example. Check that your spare tyre does not obstruct the tester's view of the undercarriage.
If you discover an issue during your pre-MOT check, do not panic. Call Tayside Mobile Tyres and we can fit replacement tyres at your home before your test appointment. In many cases, we can reach you the same day and have your car MOT-ready within hours.
After a pass or fail, keep your tyres in good condition. Regular pressure checks, visual inspections, and prompt replacement of worn or damaged tyres will keep you safe and your car legal year-round, not just at MOT time.
