Knowing when to replace your tyres is essential for safety, legality, and performance. Worn or damaged tyres increase stopping distances, reduce grip in wet weather, and raise the risk of blowouts. Here are the key signs that your tyres need replacing.
Tread depth below 3mm is the primary indicator. While the legal minimum is 1.6mm, safety experts recommend replacement at 3mm because wet braking performance drops sharply below this level. Use a tread depth gauge monthly, or try the 20p test.
Visible damage is another clear sign. Cuts deeper than 25mm or 10 percent of the tyre width, bulges in the sidewall, exposed ply or cord, and cracks in the tread or sidewall all indicate that the tyre structure is compromised. These tyres must be replaced immediately, regardless of tread depth.
Uneven wear patterns tell a story. Wear concentrated on the outer edges suggests under-inflation. Wear in the centre indicates over-inflation. One-sided wear points to wheel alignment issues. Feathering or scalloping suggests suspension problems. Addressing the underlying cause when you replace the tyres prevents the same pattern repeating.
Age matters even if the tyre looks fine. Rubber degrades over time, hardening and losing flexibility. Most manufacturers recommend replacing tyres after five to six years, regardless of tread depth. Check the DOT code on the sidewall — the last four digits show the week and year of manufacture. A code ending in 3019 means the tyre was made in the 30th week of 2019.
Vibration or noise can signal internal damage or separation. If your car develops a vibration at speed after hitting a pothole or kerb, have the tyre inspected immediately. Internal damage is invisible but can lead to sudden failure.
